Life Cycles - More Tour Dates! (and DVD Update)

As we head into this final stage of production on Life Cycles we are realizing it is no different than the struggles that came before it. We expected...planned to be shipping both DVD and BluRay on Oct 18th to the people and shops that have pre-ordered copies of the film. Since we began making Life Cycles our goal has been to offer the absolute best quality film we are capable of delivering. We recently had quality issues with our duplication process and it has set us back a bit. How many days I am not sure of yet but I will post a date once I know when we can ship them.

Sorry, the waiting starts to suck as I pre-ordered weeks ago. Actually it seems like I've been waiting for months now. I would appreciate it if you didn't give updates about more delays. Then I can forget about the waiting and be all surprised when the blu-ray eventually pops up in my post box. But I'm still 100% sure that it'll be the best video ever!

thanks for the long overdue update - the film looks to be a benchmark production, but the lack of release information has been frustrating for customers who have already paid for their copies

in future, could Pinkbike actually send an order confirmation PM or email to customers who have pre-ordered titles like Life Cycles through the PB store??

this is standard practise for all other on-line retailers like Amazon and Play

my credit card was billed over 7 weeks ago for a HD Blu-Ray copy, and our shop was billed for several SD DVD copies, yet we have received no confirmation of our orders, or any indication of when we would our copies, until your post on PB today

I received an email confirmation from Pinkbike when I placed my order. I've heard to expect my copy "in the fall" which was confirmed on one blog as being November.

But agree, premier information has been slow coming for a film that has been ramped up to be ground breaking in the MTB genre!

I received no confirmation either to my Pinkbike PM or through email, and neither did our shop which ordered separately?

I regularly order HD-Blu Ray and SD-DVD film movies from big on-line retailers, and always receive a confirmation within minutes of placing any order

the lack of information I have received, or any proper information on the PB store page for Lifecycles has not been helpful, but I'm glad its on the way soon, and cannot wait to see the Devinci factory in all its glory in HD!

Are you kidding me? I know these guys are perfectionists but at some point you need to stop with all the delays and actually put out a product. At least give us updates on when the film is coming out it would be nice to know since I pre-ordered my copy 2 months ago.

We really are sorry for this delay and unfortunately this time it is something that is totally out of our hands. The movie was submitted with plenty of time to have it completed for the Oct 18th date and sadly we are not happy with the product we are getting back and we just want to make sure we give you the best product we possibly can. Just watched it and I have to say that it is a beautiful film to watch.
But seriously, this is not a Mountainbike film, I would say that more than 50 % of the video footage doesn't show riders shredding the trails, but wonderful shots of nature. Sou you could call it a nature film. It's definetely worth watching, just for the beauty of it. But do not expect high-class riding and stunning action. What the movie does display though is high-class riding style.
The main issue that bothered me about the style of the movie were the countless slow motion film exposures, it simply gets boring after a while, sorry. Freeriding isn't about slow motion, it's about speed and the special elegancy that comes with it.
Furthermore I didn't like the story. The thing is that the filmmakers tried too hard to create a plot. I mean, yes, the words spoken are well chosen, but what do statements like "life is an act of suicide" and "humanity is good at killing" and so on have to do with Mountainbiking? If someone knows, please explain it to me. In this particular scene cut-down woods and dead trees are shown, after that we see riders cutting down trees in order to build trails. I guess the filmmakers wanted to show some connection between these two worlds, but it doesn't work out and it doesn't make any sense if you really think about it.
And why the hell don't we see the riders actually landing after they jumped an epic jump? The landing is a part of the whole thing and there insn't ainy point in interrupting this motion by zooming out of the picture and showing a (yes, it is a beautiful view...) mountain.
Life cycles could have been an outstanding Mountainbike film, if they just would have put some more riding and less scenes-without-riding in it. I believe that the filmmakers would be able to make a nice motion picture though Wink

i am pretty disillusioned with this right now. The issue that bothers me is blame passing and then the lack of respect for the customers in not informing then asap that their product wouldn't be arriving when they were told it would be. When I preordered my copy it said will be shipping to your door Oct 18th. So on the 18th i checked the mail, then again on the 19th. No dvd. Then I get on PB on the 20th, which is two days after it was supposed to either be shipped or at my house, and i read that the dvd will be delayed? What I want to know is why weren't we, the ones that preordered this months ago informed as soon as you knew you wouldn't be able to have them to us on the date advertised? If you were going to overnight them all the customers you would have at least known on the 17th that you weren't going to be able to deliver on time, so why weren't we informed at least then, why the delay of at minimum three days?
Second, why was a company not hired that had such a solid reputation to make the dvds that this fiasco would not have happened. I have never seen a movie miss its dvd launch date. That is unheard of, until now at least, in the movie making business.
I'm going to go look in the store and see if I can get my money back. I might pay for it again after it has been released, if that ever happens.

I'm sorry to hear your frustration and I understand your disappointment. You have a point as we should have informed the customer before the Oct 18th release date. On this point we were hoping to have a definite answer of when the customer could expect the DVD before we made the announcement. That never came and we're hoping to know in the next day or so. As far as the company we hired to do the duplication, they did have a solid reputation. They've done Hollywood movies and they came highly recommended. We did a lot of shopping around as this is one of the most important steps in the process. It came as a big surprise when the DVD came back to us as less then ideal. We are not cutting corners on this movie. Quality is the most important thing to us, we want customers to be happy with the end product. As a new company we are still figuring out many things and we want to be transparent to our customers. With only 2 of us things tend to pile up but no excuses here, we are working our hardest to deliver our movie in a reasonable time frame with this set back. Please except our apologies and we plan on keeping the customer informed as the information comes in. I hope you get to enjoy the movie some time in the near future. I do Thank You for your interest in Life Cycles.

Well I must say it is pretty cool to have the people in company individually responding to comments from the public. Gotta give you props for that. We have been counting the days down here in P-town, waiting for it come, planned a huge shuttle/ride day capped off with all of us watching life Cycles for the first time together on my 60 inch plasma. Unfortunately I leave to country to go back to Iraq for the 4th time at the end of this month, so now I won't get to see it with my frieds. Sorry for the frustration, we were all just super amped, checking the mail everyday and stuff. Can't wait to see it, all the teasers look amazing.

Man, i still want to say, its a one time thing, the movie does not want to make you watch it again. Vanderhams part was lame... all black and white, too serious, this movie belongs in a boutique art gallery. Im tryin to shred some terrain not see artsy fartsy environment shots... hate all you want but most of you guys havent seen it. Go put your favorite song on your ipod and go ride some stuff. Movie is wack sorry dudes i was hella stoked to see it but was let down. I even watched the pinkbike interviews after the premier.

Hey Buds we get that you don't like the movie. Let it go man and lets let the rest of us make the decision for ourselves if we think it's good or bad. I had a couple buddies who saw it in Vegas and they were utterly blown away by it. They said the visuals are like nothing else out there and they said it's different from what the expected going in but overall they liked what they saw. Currently I am going to go with them on this one until I see it for myself.

The whole movie is in slow mo... way too serious of a film and left me wanting to see a bike movie. Prob spent a year filming the weather, it was weak. The Collective is still the best mtb film. *Opinion*

You are titled to your "Opinion" but calling it weak? It may not be your cup of tea by any means but it sure isn't weak. Does it follow the typical bike movie formula, no!!!! I think thats a good thing. I'm sick of The Collective being re-packaged 4 fours times now, they're all the same movie just a different year. I feel the teaser is a great representation of the film. If you go into Life Cycles thinking you are going to 45 mins of straight riding, you'll be disappointed. If you go into Life Cycles expecting something different, something that isn't designed to stroke out the egos of the riders in it or show the latest and greatest spinny trick, then you might be pleasantly surprised. I never been in a movie that builds tension so well, that just doesn't happen in other bike movies. I've never been in a movie that really captures that way I feel when I'm riding. I feel Life Cycles does just this. Ya maybe Life Cycles isn't a movie for everyone. If you like watching 50 tailwhips or the same trick over and over again to Rise Against then Life Cycles probably isn't the movie for you. If you like seeing 2 or 3 tailwhips shot beautifully then maybe Life Cycles is for you. I understand if you don't like it, but it isn't weak. It's some of the best Cinematography i've seen just about anywhere.

Tigs you are exactly right!! And "osomtbr" your Pinkbike account was created to promote Lifecycles!! That is the only comments you have made in your profile history.

The Lifecycles trailer contains 90% of the action in the whole film. It gives you the impression that is is rich in action. The movie itself seemed rushed in the end, even after 5 long years of making it. If you think of the movie, in the context of how long it took to make, its certainly not that great. It's understandable from first time filmakers. The ending of the film is soooo weak! I understood the story too, I get it, the bike dies and then it's a dream sequence with the night black and white. It certainly didn't stoke me, and the elaborate lighting did not come through in the footage!!!! The best part was the building section, quite sick!! The intro and first 3 parts are forgettable, Hopkins hip - only one shot no landing LAME. The level of riding was average, i'm sorry but it's true.

The first collective movie will go down in my history books as the best capture of mountain biking!! that's my opinion!!!! Cause it was simple clean beautiful and real!! You can't studio shoot and recreate nature and real riding. The narration was not combined with the right action to create that emotional story telling experience, when the credits rolled I felt board.

One more thing, The lifecycles approach for there film was not new in sports films. Dont be stupid. Some cool shots though HAHA

Ya maybe I do promote Life Cycles, they really are the first thing that got me stoked since I started coming to this site. Maybe I have a little home town pride since the guys that made the movie are from my the same region. But that aside it is still an amazing movie no matter how much of a fan I've been since the beginning. The trailer doesn't contain all the riding, there is way more non riding footage in the trailer then riding footage. The I feel the movie is just as real and more beautiful then The Collective. If you go by the standards your holding Life Cycles too The Collective wasn't ground breaking either. All they did was have a couple of the riders say a few dumb statements and added some sweet soul music. I saw a guy sitting in front of me at the premier with tears is his eyes. When was the last time you saw that at a bike movie? Ya it's not in your face lets see how many shots we can fit into one segment type of movie, but what they did do was something that personally I thought was well thought out. Not everyone is going to be a fan, but I feel Life Cycles is a breath of fresh air compared to the action sports formula. At least they're doing something different.

I support that your stoked on the filmmakers, but there is going to be negative comments towards Lifecycles cause the film is simply not perfect. Not many people have seen the film yet, just the teaser.

I saw the movie, have you??, you have to admit I have a great point!! And It's just my opinion. I'm being TOTALLY HONEST, there is like 90% of the action in the teaser. Dead serious (maybe 80%). The trailer is right, it's not a bike movie. That not because it's something new, it's cause there is no riding. Baraka, Planet earth are great, and they could say there not a bike film either!! ha Those 2 films were done right, this was an attempt at that. Its an hour of portraying a sick demo real with tunes. The riding & narration tells a story but its emotional level is low, moments of the film could have been so impact-full. But no, just more slow mo and narrated passages that are gapped to far apart, I found. Narration was well written though. The movie is slightly boring I hate to say. Sorry OSOMTBR

Oh yes the good old battle of words. I have seen the movie and actually I've seen it twice now. Once in Nelson and once in Trail, it was even better the second time. No one is going to win this argument. On a movie like this you are going to have polarized opinions and it's the same with any movie. Some people think "Lord of the Rings or Inception" is the best movie ever, other think it's total crap. Life Cycles ventured to make a different movie about mountain biking and I feel they succeeded.

Second, where the hell are you getting all these percentages from? You say 100% of my comments are for life cycles, it's like 50%. Let break down the trailer, cause as I said I feel it's a good representation of the movie. The trailer is roughly 2:30 mins. For the first minute there is no riding, then at a minute there's riding footage for roughly 27 sec then they go into a mixed of mostly non riding footage for the last 30 secs, then the last 30 sec is titles. No they didn't show 80% of there footage in the teaser you idiot. Before you start throwing around numbers get your facts straight. I've seen the movie twice now and I can honestly say the movie breaks down like this 60% riding 40% other things related to riding. Yes it's different but at least these guys tried to highlight different aspects about what makes mountain biking so great and not stick to the typical rider/location type film that pretty much all action sport films stick to. Don't go throwing around ridiculous numbers, maybe it's not your type of movie but at least be honest in your assessment. Stop acting like a teenage girl and blowing everything way out of proportion. This is the last I have to say on this subject cause it's ridiculous to try and convince each other of anything. I just thought the people needed to hear the other side and someone's opinion who thought the movie was the most creative thing they've seen in years, especially in this genre.

PS Life Cycles isn't a "one time watch' movie and I feel people will be watching it for years to come. Why? Cause it doesn't follow the latest trends and it's not all about the latest and greatest tricks. Those movie get outdated as soon as the next years comes out. Nice talking with ya.

Well let me say this, the movie blows. I loved Lord of the Rings, loved Baraka, loved Inception, loved Planet Earth. I fell asleep in Life Cycles!!

5 years to make!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it's still not at your doorstep.

Well, I read alot of pinkbike comment bullshit and ignore it, this would probably be the first time I've actually responded to one of these opinionated comments. But you sir, are an idiot. I get that you have an opinion and free speech and god bless whatever, but the movie blows...? rushed...? I'm not sure if you have ever edited a movie before, but waiting months for the right weather/lighting, processing audio and sounds in post, professional colour correction, reshooting single clips years later using the original clothing and bikes is in no way rushed.
We all watched it in complete silence and awe, finished it, then immediately restarted it. Every frame was meticulously picked over and placed accordingly. I felt like this movie had been hyped way too high before I watched it, but after just watching it a couple times, I feel like there's not nearly enough hype. You are completely right, there isn't an abundance of riding, I'm not really sure why you were surprised of that. It's an art movie. The art happens to have bikes in it. Hey we all love BC/DC and backflip after backflip, sure who doesn't... but sometimes it's time to do something different.
I don't want this movie to get to the point where you're not allowed to criticize it, but your complaints go full retard.
But hey, you saw Baraka so you must know what you're talking about.

Liamm I'm very disappointed in your words, I have an extremely good point. The movie left allot to be desired. You just bought into the hype. The movie was boring, and it didnt have to be!! I've seen and edited allot in my young years and I'm just TELLING you how the overall piece made me feel when it finished. Movies are not about showing off with a camera, it's about staying to true to a subject (that they did) ,, and telling a compelling story, but the way it came together with the narration and story was slow and un-impactfull. YOU CAN EASLY ARGUE, but it was boring!!! Dont tell me I dont appreciate the time spent, that is the one thing I did really like, but these first time filmmakers could have spent 4 more months tightening the story and flow to a better ending!! 5 YEARS, wow a half decade. Figure out an impactfull story that flows!!!

It is so important to be able to express your thoughts. And that is what i am doing. I could call you names aswell,but its not worth it. Let me do my review, you dont know anything about films. I goto the Northwest film school and love films, I was let down by LifeCycles. I love art, and i'm saying this story about a bike needed more biking in it! I wasnt expecting a bike movie.

Baraka was the movie that influenced them, but they put biking in it, it didnt work!! And once again i'll state this- This is just my opinon!!! OK

commentpolice, it's ok to be wrong sometimes. I notice from your other responses that you like to throw out numbers so I got some for you. I've talked with a hell of a lot of people on this especially since you two started talking about how bad the movie is and this is what I got. About 98% of people think the movie is amazing. The only reason it's not a 100 is because of the comments you two are making. I guess the majority of people are wrong in this case and you are right because you're some kind of expert cause you did some editing in your younger years and now you say to go to some kind of film school? One of my most trusted friends currently works in LA and has worked on some of the biggest films, including Inception. He saw Life Cycles in Vegas and couldn't believe the quality and how powerful the movie was, especially since these guys are "first time filmmakers." He said it was one of the most impressive things he's seen in a long time. Just because you've taken a few film classes doesn't make you an expert and by saying the rest of us don't know anything. I can see why Liam is calling you an idiot, it's because you act like you know everything and accusing everyone else of being idiots because they like this movie.

Do you want the know what boring is. "Follow Me", I stopped watching the movie half way through cause it was the same old s*%t getting repeated over and over again. You are talking about Life Cycles having a B&W section well from what I gather at least their's made sense why it's B&W. In Follow Me what was up with the B&W and leaving their T-shirts colored? Being a "film guy" you should know that's been lame since about 1999 to 2000. The only section worth anything is NZ in that movie. Action sport films in general have gotten stale, I haven't been able to make it through a ski film in about 3 years now. Give it up buddy, you don't have a leg a stand on. It's ok to say you don't like something but to accuse the rest of us as not being in the know. Get off your high horse buddy, your only 19 you pretty much know Jack. PS get your facts straight. It only took them 2 years the shot the movie and another 8 months in post production. The other time was spent doing other things and fund raising.

That's too bad it didn't meet your expectations but I always knew from the beginning we were going to have some fans and some people who weren't stoked on the amount of riding. osomtbr/vivalarevolution, I'm pretty sure I know who this is (aka office friend) thanks for the defending the film but as commentpolice said the movie needs to stand on it's own two feet. I too went to Film school and I probably believe the film is good for a lot reasons you believe it's bad. There's no use arguing about it. Only time will tell what the general feeling is about it. Yup there's going to be some people who hate it but in general we are getting some amazing feedback. Both from inside and outside of the bike industry. All I can say about the film is it's something that I am proud of. Other then that I'm sure everyone has had their chance to say what they want to say about the film and there's no use arguing about it. Thanks again everyone for your interest and support. Ryan Gibb

We would never say anything against the Anthill boys and "the collective" is still one of my favorite movies. Commentpolice thank you in the end for the nice comment even after all this discussion, now it's time we close this argument but yes it's ok to give your point of view, that's the beauty of where we live.
